Why Summer Heat Might Be Ruining Your Sleep
And what Florida sleepers can actually do about it — from your mattress to your base to your bedding.
It’s June in Florida. The AC is running, the fan is on, and somehow you’re still waking up at 2 a.m. in a sweat. You’re not imagining it — summer really does wreck your sleep, and the reason goes deeper than just feeling uncomfortable.
The science behind heat and sleep
Your body needs to drop its core temperature by about 1–2 degrees Fahrenheit to fall into deep, restorative sleep. That process starts naturally as the sun goes down. But when the ambient temperature stays high — especially in a Florida bedroom — your body’s cooling system gets overwhelmed. The result? You take longer to fall asleep, you spend less time in the deep stages, and you wake up more often through the night.
Why you wake up more in summer
Nighttime temperatures in Southwest Florida regularly stay above 80°F well past midnight. Even with air conditioning, your mattress and bedding can trap heat and create a microclimate around your body that climbs throughout the night. Add a partner, and that heat compounds quickly.
The lighter stages of sleep are especially vulnerable to thermal disruption. When your body senses it’s too warm, it pulls you up out of deep sleep to regulate — often at the same time every night, which is why so many people report waking like clockwork around 2 or 3 a.m. in the summer.
What most people don’t realize: It’s often not the room temperature — it’s the sleep surface. A conventional foam mattress can trap 2–4 degrees of excess body heat over the course of the night, even in an air-conditioned room.
Cooling mattress technologies worth knowing
The good news is that mattress technology has genuinely caught up to the problem. Here’s what actually makes a difference:
All three brands take a different approach to the same problem, and the right choice depends on how you sleep — hot, cold, on your side, on your back — and whether you share the bed. That’s exactly the kind of thing our team helps customers figure out in person.
Breathable sheets and pillows make a bigger difference than you think
Your mattress matters, but your bedding is the first thing that touches your skin. Standard polyester-blend sheets can raise your surface temperature measurably compared to natural fiber alternatives.
Look for: percale-weave cotton (crisp, breathable, durable), Tencel/Lyocell (moisture-wicking, silky feel, great for hot sleepers), or linen (the most breathable option, especially in high humidity). For pillows, shredded latex and buckwheat both allow significant airflow compared to traditional memory foam.
Pro tip: Thread count is mostly a marketing number. A 300-thread-count percale sheet sleeps cooler than a 1,000-thread-count sateen. Weave type matters more than count.
Adjustable base positions that actually help
One of the least-talked-about benefits of an adjustable base is its effect on temperature regulation. Elevating the head of your bed — even just 10–15 degrees — can improve airflow across your body and reduce the pooling of heat around your torso and neck.
For couples with different temperature preferences, a split adjustable base allows each side to be positioned independently. Pair that with a zoned or dual-sided mattress, and two people with very different sleep needs can finally share a bed comfortably — even in a Florida summer.
Zero gravity position (head and feet slightly elevated) also reduces pressure on the body’s circulatory system, which can help with the mild inflammation that makes hot nights feel even more restless.
The simplest things you can do tonight
While you’re thinking about a longer-term upgrade, a few things help immediately: keep your bedroom between 65–68°F if possible, run a fan to create airflow even if the AC is on, and try sleeping with a single layer rather than layering blankets you’ll kick off anyway. A cooling mattress protector is also an affordable first step if a new mattress isn’t in the budget right now.
