The "online is cheaper" myth

Here's what online brands don't put in the ads: most of them are owned by the same parent companies that own the brands you'll find in stores. The "direct-to-consumer" pricing isn't always the bargain it looks like. The reality is that the online price is the same price we charge in store but we are able to provide better services like trying in store and delivery setup and removal of your old mattress.

Some online mattresses are genuinely well-priced. Others are marked up just like store models, with the savings going into Facebook ads and influencer payouts instead of showroom rent.

What you give up: the ability to lie on it before you spend your money.

What you can't do online

- Feel the firmness. Every brand defines "medium" differently. The "medium" you bought online might be what we'd call firm. Or soft. There's no standard.
- Try multiple options side by side. When you can compare three mattresses in 20 minutes, you learn what your body actually wants.
- Get expert input. A good salesperson asks the right questions about your body, your sleep style, your pain points. An online quiz can't do that.
- See it in person before you commit. A mattress is the second-most-used piece of furniture in your home, after maybe your couch. Buying one just by sight is a leap.

The "120-night trial" pitch

Online brands love to tell you about their generous trial periods. And yes, you can return a mattress if you don't like it. But here's what they don't show you in the commercial:

- You have to schedule a pickup that often takes weeks
- Restocking and pickup fees are common
- Refunds can take 4–6 weeks to process
- Many brands donate or destroy returned mattresses— they don't resell them, which means the "low online price" assumes most people won't return, even when they should

The trial works, but it's not as friction-free as the marketing suggests.

## When online makes sense

- You're buying a guest room mattress and don't want to fuss
- You're on a tight budget and the savings actually matter
- You've owned the exact same model before and you're just replacing it
- You live somewhere with no real local mattress retailer

When you should buy in person

- You have back pain, hip pain, or any sleep issues
- You sleep with a partner and you've never agreed on firmness
- You want it delivered, set up, and old mattress hauled away — 
- You want a real  experience with a human you can call
